Animals

Wild and not so 'wild' animals

The Birdsong garden has visits from many birds and animals and we have introduced goldfish and 'Foxy' our cat. The gold fish started as five red, 'The Jackson Five', and three blue ones, 'The Three Degrees'. Unfortunately the Three Degrees and one of The Jackson Five fell pray to a Heron. However, mid way through 2022 we realised that the remaining goldfish were truly at home as there had been a population explosion.

Foxy is our beloved cat who is ever present in the garden. We believe that she is probably the most photographed cat on the planet.

We get plenty of butterflies, there are frogs resident in the pond from Spring til Autumn and lots of birds. Nightingales and Blackbirds provide us with beautiful songs and we see plenty of other birds.

Although not often seen we know that there are Hedgehogs in the garden by there little messages (pooh) they leave.

Nightingale

We are very lucky to have these very shy birds in our garden. Their song in Spring is magnificent. They nest at the bottom of the garden and if we are lucky and quiet, we see them in other parts of the garden.

Blackbird

Naughty but nice is how we describe our Blackbird residents. They love raking over mulches and will move plant labels as they look for goodies to eat. They only have to sing to be forgiven their misdemea-nours.

Blackbirds 2

When we have snow blackbirds make the most of the opportunity to enjoy themselves by making patterns in the snow as they play

Goldfinch

Not often seen but they come to our bird feeders on occasion. Usually in groups but very occasionally alone.

Frogs

Spring until early Autumn. Frogs come to the pond to sun themselves on the rocks. We have yet to have tadpoles and we have not seen any frogs' eggs. Fingers crossed!

Budgerigar

An escapee from somewhere. Blue boy arrive one summer and filled the garden with squarks when he was around. He never allowed us to get very close and unfortunately disappeared in the Autumn. We hope he enjoyed his time being free.

Green Lizards

Another ever present in the garden. Generally shy of us but occasionally have been known to watch Sheila working in the garden. They can make a fearsome noise when confronted by a cat and will stand their ground. An amazing sight seeing them puff up.

Foxy

Foxy is ever present in the garden. True, she may not be totally wildlife friendly but we have much less problems with rodents eating our crops than our neighbours do.

Hedge Hogs

It's nice to know they are in the garden rather than risking their lives crossing the road. We do not have a real problems with slugs and snails and are sure that Hedgehogs are eating their share.
